Women of all ages pursue Lip Augmentation:
- Some women have asymmetric lips (upper lips and lower lips differ substantially in fullness) and seek injections to create a more symmetrical appearance
- Some women have lip lines related to smoking, genetics, sun exposure, or a combination of these factors. This can lead to an aged appearance and difficult makeup application. Injections can plump up lip lines and create younger, smoother, more attractive lips.
- Some women do not have either of these concerns, but simply want more attractive, full, sensuous lips.
Procedure
There are many different products used as injectable fillers for Lip Augmentation. Individual patient preferences and differences in product characteristics will determine which injectable product is best for each patient and can be discussed during the consultation process. Some of these provide permanent augmentation, while others provide a temporary correction. The actual duration of correction/augmentation using temporary filling agents is dependent on individual patient factors and the particular agent used. The duration of effect ranges from 3 to 15 months for temporary agents to very long term (5 years or longer) or life long correction for permanent agents.
The filling agent is injected into the upper and lower lips to achieve better fullness, shape, and form. All synthetic injectables are in stock at all times. The injection procedure using synthetics is performed under local anaesthesia and requires only a few minutes to complete. These procedures are performed at SKIN MediSpa.
Using the patient's own fat for Lip Augmentation requires an additional minor procedure during which a small amount of fat is removed, processed and prepared using customized equipment prior to injection into the lip. Recent improvements in the technique and equipment used in the preparation of microfat injections have greatly increased the amount of permanence offered by this alternative. Once the fat has been prepared, it is injected in the same manner as that used for synthetic injectables. Local anaesthesia with sedation is used during the fat harvesting procedure, while local anaesthesia only is used during the injection procedure. The combined time requirement for the fat harvesting, preparation and injection is approximately 1 hour.
Post-Operative Course
Patients can resume normal activities immediately following an injection procedure. Most injectables cause some swelling for a period 24 to 36 hours. This swelling will be slightly noticeable but in most cases would not prevent one from carrying out most normal activities within 12 hours. Microfat grafts cause slightly more swelling and require 48 to 72 hours to resume normal activities.
