Rhinophyma is a condition that has where sebaceous glands of the nose become severely enlarged. As a result, the nose develops a very bumpy, large, red, appearance. In addition, the nose can become malodorous. It is often improperly referred to as a "drinker nose", however, it is in fact an extension of the acne process. It can cause problems with air flow when extreme. This condition can become a significant social problem for many.

Although this condition is more commonly seen in men, it can affect both men and women. Rhinophyma commonly affects people between the ages of 45 and 65 and often have a history of acne as a youth and/or young adult.
Surgical correction of rhinophyma involves resection of the abnormal nasal growth, subcutaneous tissue and sebaceous glands. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and sedation. At the completion of the procedure, the nose has a raw surface which takes eight to ten days to heal. During this time, an antibiotic ointment is applied three times per day. Once healed, the nose may be slightly pink in colour for an additional ten to fourteen days. It can be covered with camouflage makeup, which is available at Barr Plastic Surgery Centre. Once treated, the results are long-term.
